Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Online teaching has proven to have its advantages and challenges. Although we are grateful for the advancements in technology, something I have learned from the past month is that online teaching is not equitable. We consistently meet for our Zoom classes and most of my students are in attendance. I have set up an easy to use platform in which students have access to several different free online resources. Our biggest issues are in students not being able to access the material because of the lack of reliable devices and insufficient Internet bandwidth, making it difficult for us to connect.

Despite current challenges, one thing that has not changed is my students' wonderful imagination for writing, their will to learn, and their optimism.

Throughout our distance learning, we have especially enjoyed writing. My students find great joy in creating writing pieces and then posting them in our classroom shared Padlet for others to view.

My Project

I have many books in my classroom library. The children enjoy reading these books, talking and writing about them. They even make recommendations to one another. Even though I have so many books for them to choose from, I know I need to do better. I need to include more titles that teach diversity, the meaning of love and compassion, books that teach kids to love themselves as well as others despite one's differences. Although, when we will return to our classroom is still unknown, during my virtual classes I would like to read books that promote love and diversity. With these books I can read and have discussion with my students about these topics. It is my hope that by including books that touch on these topics I can add to the efforts being made by many to make lasting change in how our world view people who are different.
