My Students
My students are from a large, urban community that welcomes families from all backgrounds. They bring a blend of diversity, prior experiences, and culture to our school. I teach in a Kindergarten inclusion classroom where several of my students receive special education services for a range of disabilities, including intellectual, emotional, autism spectrum disorder, and many other specific learning disabilities. Many of my students also receive ESL services. The majority of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, which are now being offered remotely to every child/family that needs it.
They are a hard-working group of students that are eager to learn and grow!
My Project
A culturally diverse classroom library is important! My students need to see and hear stories that represent them, their culture, their community, and their world. In light of all that is going on in our world, now more than ever we need to meet this urgent need.
In our increasingly diverse society, it’s more important than ever for teachers to incorporate culturally responsive instruction in the classroom.
Fostering inclusion and awareness around multicultural education and taking a culturally responsive approach to teaching benefits all students. These books will create greater multicultural awareness and promote inclusion to help students with different backgrounds and needs succeed. While encouraging acceptance and helping to prepare students to thrive in an exponentially diverse world.
