Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

How can we all get along if we don't appreciate each other? How can we solve problems peacefully as citizens of the world if we don't know each other? Why pass aside the amazement, the beauty, and the joy each culture offers? How can we know our uniqueness if we don't know the others? These are some of the reasons why I would like to offer my second graders simple books about countries in the world. Informational texts lower grades can enjoy are very limited, but I finally found two sets of 12 books, a fact finder, a culture center, and a photo book series that would motivate children because they would be able to enjoy on their own; at the same time they would develop social competence, efficient working habits, and basic skills such as reading, writing, and thinking! As a second grade teacher in a Language Arts and Social Justice Magnet School, my focus is the respect of self and others. This encompasses discipline and ambition as well as activism and compassion. African American students form about 75% of our school alongside with Latin and Asian children. This rich diversity of cultures offers unlimited opportunities to learn tolerance and team work while discovering new perspectives. However, our school and our families can't afford the sources we need to support significant academic knowledge. The two sets of 12 books would travel the classroom; every morning, students would read a book to find facts that amazed them; then they would report it in writing. The class would take turn to share some facts orally. After a week or so, students would exchange with a neighbor until everyone had access to all texts. In the past, I checked out books from five different public libraries; but most books were outdated with faded photos from the seventies. Moreover, I often couldn't find texts matching my kids' independent reading level... Despite this, students still loved this independent reading time and became more curious about their world. It was a pure joy to see them talk together about what they were discovering! New books they can easily read would only reinforced the joy of reading while supporting a more significant academic knowledge. The fact finders, the continent activity chest, and photo book series would allow students to work in groups. During Independent Work Time, right before recess, students could visit the center and fill up a report on a continent. Their only obligations would be to study one continent at a time and have researched each continent by Easter. The size of their group, the time allotted for each research, or the schedule would be up to them. This chest designed for grade 1 to 3 covers all reading levels for second grade and insured that all students would be able to enjoy this educational experience. I wish my students could have access to this opportunity because it would not only enhance their reading, speaking, writing, and thinking skills, but develop their motivation to learn, independence, and social competence. They would be on their way to define who they are and why they are here.
