Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I will have a group of twenty-two first graders! They are bilingual, bicultural, and love school. They are learning to read in two languages and love to read to their friends at school. They are also blossoming writers and are take writing very seriously. This class is unique because they all had their kindergarten experience here at this school. They love moving around and working with their friends in learning centers. The students also love to help within the classroom and take their job roles very seriously.
Our school is in the heart of our Chicago neighborhood.
Kids are excited to come to our school because we provide the structure and experiences that they need to make learning meaningful to them. Teachers at our school make a conscientious effort to provide books where students can see themselves and their experiences reflected in these books.
My Project
Piggie and Elephant books in Spanish are just what we need to ignite that love and desire to read. My first-grade students will come to school in the Fall, never having experienced a live classroom. First graders need to review letters, sounds, and sight words. In addition to this, I want my library to be filled with new books in Spanish and highly appealing.
I am hoping to introduce Piggie and Elephant books to teach rhyming words and dialogue in a fun way.
These books will also provide lots of mini-lessons and models for us to write about.
