My Students

My students are a diverse group of learners who attend a public elementary school in downtown Berkeley. Our classroom is a special community because of the children that fill it, and they each bring their own cultural and life experiences with them. They come from all walks of life, and they rely deeply on the structure that our classroom brings to their daily lives.

My first graders are curious, empathetic, funny, and resilient students who love books.

They just began an incredibly important year of school, both socially and academically, completely online. While there are some online resources for reading, nothing is quite like the feeling of a book in your hands, especially for young kids learning to read. They deserve to still be able to grow their love of reading and books, even while participating in virtual school!

My Project

Distance learning can be tricky for all involved, but it is hardest on the kids. I want to bring joy to my students during this challenging time! This project will put more accessible, diverse, and inspiring books into the hands of my first graders. Every few weeks, these "just right books" will be sent home with kids in book bags to encourage them to grow as readers.

As their teacher and advocate, I want to give my students a variety of books that will build a love for reading.

First grade is a year of huge reading growth, and it is my job to provide them with books that are of high interest and have characters that look like them or that they can relate to! These books will give my students more reading choices that reflect them and their interests, along with providing for special reading time at home with their families.
