Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Diversity in literature is essential for students to have access to because it can offer them a window into different experiences, cultures and perspectives that they may not typically be exposed to. Reading books that feature characters from diverse backgrounds can help students develop a sense of empathy and understanding for those around them that may be different from them. It also allows them to see their own personal experiences and challenges represented in literature which can channel the feeling of empowerment and validation.

When students are able to read books that relate to them, it can have a profound impact on their sense of self and their overall academic success.

Many of my students come from underrepresented groups, and having access to books that feature characters who share experiences similar to their own, look like them, or even come from the same cultural background can be a transformative experience. High School students are in a critical time in their lives, where they are beginning to learn who they are and what they stand for. The diversity in these books can help students develop a stronger sense of identity and belonging, which could lead to an increase in students' academic achievement and engagement.

In today’s globalized world, diverse literature can help students prepare for life outside of the standard classroom environment. By reading literature that features diverse characters and themes, students can have a better understanding and appreciation for different perspectives and cultures. By donating to this project, we will be providing students with books that can help students develop the cross-cultural competencies they need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
