This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a high poverty area in Baltimore City. It is a Title I school with over 470 students in grades pre-k to five. My students love to read and they get excited about new books I introduce. They come into the library eager to discover what we will be reading that day. Many of my students do not have books at home.
Checking out books from our school library each week provides students with greater access to books.
My students are able to check out a book from my library every week. It is one of their favorite things to do. Many of my students stop by the library before school to check out a new book. They are so excited to get a new book that they do not want to wait until their next class period. They are truly developing a love for reading.
My Project
I am always looking for new books to grab my students' interests and keep them reading. Recently, I have had several students looking for funny books. After looking through the shelves, I noticed that I have a few humorous series books, but they are always checked out and very hard to come by. I also realized that we do not have any joke books in the library. This is something I want to change.
Joke books may seem silly, but they are actually great at building confidence and inspiring a love for reading.
Reluctant readers find the short sentences and phrases enjoyable. They are also fun to read aloud and entertain others.
I am requesting the National Geographic joke book series. These books are sure to engage students with their animal jokes. In addition, I am also requesting one of my favorite funny books to read aloud, A Book With No Pictures, as well as several other funny books that are sure to engage my reluctant readers.
Adding funny favorites and humorous nonfiction books will fill a gap in the library collection and encourage a new group of students to check out a new book!
