Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My latest favorite subject to teach in my first grade classroom is writing. Our day today was chock full of writing, and our current genre is fiction. We read a funny book and mapped out the beginning, middle, and end, and identified the problem and the solution. The students then got a chance to map out their own stories, which some turned into rough drafts. A few of them even arrived at the editing and final draft stages. You wouldn't believe how many of these six and seven-year-olds begged to stay in during recess so that they could work on their stories! You can see why I love teaching writing!
Despite the students' enthusiasm and speed, there is work to be done on in room. Their stories lacked powerful beginnings and endings and exciting words. Some of them need help with their ideas and are simply retelling familiar fairy tales at this point. Others need help with sentence fluency and organization. This is the one of the two proposals I am putting together to add books to our classroom library that will be used to improve my students' writing. I am reading a book about the traits of writing, and these are books that are suggested as good models of ideas, fluency, organization, word choice, voice, and conventions. I chose hardcover editions so that they would last as long as possible, and they will be shared, like everything in my classroom, with a fellow first grade teacher with whom I collaborate closely.
Thank you for spicing up our writing!
