My first graders love to learn! Our classroom is a positive environment where students regularly display positive character traits like empathy, compassion, kindness, and perseverance. We are a rural farming community. Our school serves students in grades Pre-K through 5th. Within the population, 17% are students with disabilities and 80% are economically disadvantaged. We provide a free breakfast and lunch to all children in the school district. Because of declining enrollment, our school also receives less funding than 5-10 years ago and continues to face a budget crisis. With your support, I will be able to teach the foundations of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension), using high-quality literature, to my students.
My first-graders are excited to transition from learning to decode and read the words on the page to understanding what is happening in the books that they are reading!
In our classroom, students can be seen engaged in a variety of activities, such as reader's workshop, literacy workstations, guided reading, shared reading, writer's workshop, guided math, math workstations, and science exploration.
The books I am requesting will be used as Read Alouds during our literacy and math lessons. I will be using these carefully selected texts to teach a variety of literacy skills, including vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. I will be using the math-themed books to reinforce a variety of math skills, including addition/subtraction, greater than/less than, measurement, and graphing.
These high-interest books will be used to help my students learn to make predictions, compare and contrast texts, develop their vocabulary, and to make personal connections.
Included in my project are storage cases, which will be extremely useful for organizing the books, lesson plans, materials, and other related resources.
