My Students

We continue to live in unfamiliar times. We are working, and learning from home in most cases. Many students have limited or no access to books. Reading provides so many opportunities for children to learn and grow. Speech and language development is enriched through books. Creativity and innovation is inspired by books.

Culturally responsive books allow children to see themselves represented in stories that show children that look like them, or live in communities like theirs or provide a window into a new experience that they can imagine themselves in.

Books have the ability to unite students to the world around them and help them to feel connected.

My Project

Help me to give my students books with stories that they can relate to. Stories help students feel connected, appreciated, relevant, and accepted. These culturally relevant books will be a lending library for the student to take home and exchange weekly during our extended distance learning experience.

Students will be able to choose books that have children that look like them and have experiences that are similar to those they have had.

Children need to feel validated and accepted in their school community. Through the experience of reading books that have characters that they can relate too helps to build their self-confidence.
