Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, we focus on the whole child and their needs in order to help them access learning in the best way possible. Ninety-eight percent of the students at our school receive free and reduced lunch. Many of them access our school pantry to provide the basics such as food, clothing, and toiletries. 6% of the students in our school are identified as homeless or migrant students. Fifty-three percent are identified as a minority, with 26% having limited English proficiency.

My special education classroom has 16 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, with many different abilities and challenges.

These students will benefit from access to supplies that support differentiated instruction to address their individual learning styles and needs.

My Project

My students in special education need support in learning and developing their social and emotional learning skills. We use the Second Step: Social-Emotional Skills for Early Learning Curriculum. Some of the topics taught through this curriculum include Empathy (Identifying Feelings, Accidents, Caring, and Helping) and Emotion Management (We Feel Feelings in Our Bodies, Strong Feelings, Naming Feelings, Managing Disappointment, Managing Anger, and Managing Waiting).

With these twenty-one books, my students in special education will have stories to support their social/emotional learning and development.

These books will be read by a teacher during discussion of the social-emotional learning topic of the day. These books will provide the students with a variety of stories to foster discussion and development of the skills being taught.
