Books, Supplies and Abaci, Oh My!

My students need books, literacy centers and abacuses to strengthen their reading, writing and math skills.

My Students

We have a dynamic community of students and families. There is an ongoing influx of refugees coming into this low-income community every year from refugee camps in Africa, Asia and East Europe with no prior formal education. The K-8 charter is about 10 years old and was created by parents, most of whom were refugees from war-torn Somalia. These concerned parents wanted to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment where their children could thrive and their culture be elevated.

My Project

I am requesting a smorgasbord of classroom supplies that are needed to sustain the daily activities of my students. My diverse classroom will greatly benefit from the photo cards, the reading and writing game library and phonics learning center to build language, increase vocabulary and strengthen their reading and writing skills.

Your generous donation to my project will greatly improve my class by building strong and independent readers and writers.

Last year, I was a first-year teacher and spent almost $3,000.00 of my own money on basic supplies. This year, I am hoping with the funding of this project to not only cover the basics, but to also provide more engaging and stimulating activities to my class.
