My Students

My students are primarily at-risk, low income, struggling readers. My school is a dropout prevention alternative school. Our students typically struggle with reading comprehension and motivation, so we work in small class settings to help give each student what they need.

Students come to our school because a traditional school hasn’t worked for them for one reason or another, so we really try to make our school work for them by catering to their interests and abilities to help them be successful.

My Project

These materials will make a difference for my students because they are struggling, reluctant readers. I am a firm believer that everyone can love reading if given the proper book. Tears of a Tiger and Orbiting Jupiter are two novels that feature teenagers who have made mistakes in their past and are given a second chance.

Our school exemplifies that idea, being called The Tomorrow Center.

We are a dropout prevention school, and our students will be able to relate to the experiences in both of these novels. I want to be able to read literature with my students that they can relate to. There is great power in seeing yourself reflected in a work of literature.
