Help me give my students the chance to explore and enjoy reading different genres of books. Help give them a reading nook where they can get comfy and dig into a good book.
Many of these kids hate reading. All they've ever read is what they have to read for school. I've gotten several complaints of "Why do we have to do this (SSR Reading Project)? I know how to read!"
Nearly the entire district is reading below grade level; I want to help change that.
These kids don't see the benefit of reading, though after our first quarter, I'm hearing kids say "I'm reading faster that I used to!" Precisely! That is why we are doing this project. These kids need help even if they don't know or understand why.
My Project
As an English teacher, it is part of my job to do all I can to engage students and show them the payoff of reading. By creating a comfortable and fun space for them to read, it may make a positive association between reading and comfiness. It may help them to realize that reading doesn't have to be a chore.
By having a large selection of books, this allows students to explore different worlds, time periods, and cultures.
Being a first-year teacher in a small school district, we are in dire need of books. I am in dire need of books for my classroom that I can recommend to my students. These books and bean bag chairs would be the beginning of a book nook that I will continually add to over the years and it will give my students a safe, comfy place to fall in love with books.
