Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a public education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are thirsty for knowledge.
My students believe in themselves and their abilities.
They are reading, writing, solving math problems, investigating, and questioning the world around them. They are becoming critical thinkers and problem solvers. In the words of BB King, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you."
I have students who speak Spanish, Hmong, Chinese, Laotian, Khmer, and English. I have students who live with a single parent, with grandparents, with aunts and uncles, are homeless, in foster care, have LGBT parents, and with both parents. My students are from low income families and working poor families. My students come to school with bright smiles and are eager to learn. With the many things happening in their life, my students have the skills to survive. They are resilient and crave for knowledge and a better outlook on life. My school hosts about 745 students. We are a public school serving students from all walks of life.
My Project
The materials in my project will give my students the opportunity to appreciate books and recognize the importance of books.
Books will open their minds and will take them places they can only imagine.
My students will also learn from books and appreciate the authors' purpose and message in writing the books to share with their readers.
Having an abundance of book choices in my classroom library will encourage my students to read, and support my students to become authors themselves.
The sets of fiction and nonfiction books will help guide my students in appreciating the different genres that they can read.
