This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are on their way to becoming independent readers who love a good book. Our class goal is to show more than one year's growth in literacy.
My students are in fourth grade, but the majority of them are reading below grade level.
They live in a neighborhood without a library and attend a school without a library. The only books available to my students are books that I have purchased for the classroom.
My Project
These brand new books will be added to our classroom library. Students will have the opportunity to choose "just right" books to take home and read each night. Students will be able to practice literacy skills learned in the classroom. Students will learn to enjoy reading good books.
As my students learn to love books, they will read more.
The best way to become a better reader is to read, read, and read. Students will become independent readers. This project will help my students to make the switch from learning to read to reading to learn. Then the doors of opportunity will be opened for my students.
