Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class would absolutely love to be able to read more books. Teaching third grade in a small community outside of San Jose has been such a joy this year. The community I teach in is low-income but it is full of hope. This year my students have made a lot of progress. In fact, many of my second graders are reading near the third grade level.
As part of our day we use tapes with books for a reading workshop where the students disperse around the room into small groups and read to audiotapes. Although my classroom library has grown, most of the books are at a third grade reading level. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide the groups with books that challenge them.
It is so important that my students love to read. Many of the titles I picked out provide high interest content-related topics with third grade readability. Some of the books with tapes are science content and don't give a lot of variety for literature learning.
Obtaining these high interest books that will challenge my students' reading levels will be a wonderful addition to our class library. It will push my students to reach new reading levels. I encourage my students to set big goals. As we progress toward the end of the year I want to continue to encourage them to set big goals. Reading these books will provide my students and I with that opportunity.
