This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Middle Schoolers are so special! They are figuring out who they want to be, and their identities are being discovered. One way to allow them to express their feelings and explore the outside world is through books.
There’s nothing like the feeling of introducing a reader to their new favorite book.
Books are the windows to the outside world which allows students to have multi-dimensional views. Students can become part of different worlds in the comfort of the classroom. They are not judged on what book they pick but instead encouraged to share ideas with others. In middle school, there are many themes we discuss such as friendship, grief/loss, and family. Seeing a character in a middle-grade novel experience grief can help kids to feel less alone. Even for students who have not experienced the pain of loss, these novels can give them a deep sense of empathy for those that have.
Students will be provided time to read and discuss the various books they have read. This is important to help them discover a character that they can relate to. Books are an escape to a different world. My goal is to introduce books through First Chapter Friday, in which students listen to the first chapter and are able to rate it. This helps expose students to different genres to help them pick their favorite books!
