My Students

My school is in a low socioeconomic environment that serves a student population in which the majority of my students are at-risk and receive free or reduced price lunch. As a teacher of middle school students, it is imperative that I come up with creative ways to create eager and excited readers and writers in my classroom. All my students need are the right materials and a little creativity. In an age where technology is everywhere, it is important that I provide opportunities that strengthen their literacy skills without relying solely on technology. Having all of the materials accessible will help me create a safe classroom environment where the focus is solely on learning and growing.

My Project

Diverse sets of books in my classroom will serve various purposes. First, these books will help me create a culturally responsive learning environment that meets the needs of all of my students. Additionally, access to such a diverse set of books extends the classroom beyond the limitations of its four walls. Students will be able to read various stories with characters and experiences that they can relate to. At an age where many of them no longer have a love for reading, I feel that it is my responsibility and duty to remind my students how rewarding reading can be.

Having a plethora of books in my classroom will also create multiple learning opportunities in which I can use books as mentor texts.

With books as mentor texts, I can teach my students how to identify and use author's craft as a guide to help them become better readers who will also become better writers and better learners.
