Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Basals, as most education professionals know, is not the solution to better education. Unfortunately, Chicago has not caught on. As a result our classroom libraries are unfunded.
Although I teach fifth grade, I am at a school where most children are Hispanic and come from Spanish-speaking homes. As a result, there are students in my classroom who are reading at every level, from first to sixth grade. This is when classroom libraries and leveled texts is extremely important, even vital to a good learning environment.
I am requesting sets of books and novels that will strengthen my library. The focus of this grant is books whose subject is math, such as "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi" and "Math Mummy: An Adventure in Geometry." This lets me kill two birds with one stone: literacy and math. Books with math as the main topic are fantastic as they help show kids that math can be entertaining and relevant to their lives.
The books will greatly improve my ability to teach kids who are reading on different levels. Currently, with the basals and limited books in my library, too many kids are reading texts so difficult that they become frustrated and don't want to learn. This grant would help many struggling students.
