Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an amazing Art and Science Elementary Charter school in the Los Angeles Area. In my third grade classroom, my ELL (English Language Learners) and GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students need more research resources. As a new school our library is still in the process of getting books and organized. I have a classroom library with various fiction books but I do not have enough non-fiction books to help them with their research projects.
We set high standards for our students. When my third grade students have finished their work they are challenged to research science topics on their chosen interests. I found two books from the Kingfisher Young Knowledge series but would like to purchase the whole series with your help. I can attest to their usefulness in the classroom. One book was about dolphins where a student created a display board along with photos and an essay. She ended up typing six paragraphs and our standard is one well-developed paragraph in third grade. Another student used the book on robots for his project. He designed his own space moon rover.
What I like about each book is that key vocabulary words are explained at the bottom of each page and vivid photographs are included on all pages. The best part of each book is that hands-on project ideas are included. All of these features are essential in teaching ELL students as they help to develop vocabulary, and provide for further understanding. My students are so excited and motivated by the opportunity to research areas of interest to them. This has increased their exposure to advanced expository texts. I believe this is why all of my students are reading a grade level or more ahead from when they first started in my classroom. Their willingness to write more has also increased because they get to choose their topics.
