My Students

My students are hungry readers. They read for pleasure regularly. They are learning the art of reading between the lines to find the author's message. The are also learning how to let an author's words transport them to another place and time.

My students love to read.

I have a small classroom library that is growing thanks to Donors Choose and generous parents. My students are great kids who love to read, but they get into ruts. They find their favorite genre or time period and stick with it, reading the same kinds of books over and over. Getting them to change and to read something different is a challenge -- especially when my supply of good literature in limited. There are so many great books out there -- and it's my job to help the students find them!

My Project

My students need 9 copies of One Crazy Summer, 9 copies of Stuck on Earth and 24 copies of The Wednesday Wars for book club and class wide literacy. My students have heard about life in the 1960s and 1970s and they have heard about the Vietnam War. Many of their grandfathers were in the war. Two of these titles were chosen because of the ability of the author to transport my students to that time -- when live was simpler, in many wars, and more complicated in other ways. The third book ties in well but it takes place in an imagined future. Encouraging my students to get out of their comfort zone and to explore different time periods and locales is a critical component of this project.

The ability to empathize is difficult to teach -- and to learn.

The authors of these books provides a riveting look into another person's life and environment. My students are college bound. Yes, it will take them awhile to get there, but in the meantime I want to make sure that they have high quality, appropriate literature to read and encourage them to grow intellectually. My kids need books -- it's as simple as that.
