My Project

Many of my students have struggled to find books where they can see character that look like them, talk like them, and do everyday things just like them. I have always made it my goal to have books that represent all of my students in our classroom library.

Recently, a student who is a self-declared nonreader told me, "Miss Willis, this book you gave me, it's like I'm watching a movie, the main character is 17, and I'm 17, he's playing basketball with his friends and they're talking noise on the court--I can see all of it in my head while I'm reading."

That's what it's about. When a book is relatable and well-written, it will pull a reader inside and show them its literary world. It is necessary to read academic texts, but when a student can fall in love with a novel, that is something special to me.
