Hello! I teach 5th grade at a high-poverty school in Middle Tennessee. My students come from many different backgrounds, we have a high ESL population, and many of our students are considered at-risk students. Our school is home to just over 400 students and is located in a small town south of Nashville.
I would love to provide my students with a diverse classroom library.
This year one of my goals is to diversify my classroom library. I want my students to be able to find books with characters who look like them and who have some of the same life experiences. This project will fund books that I will add to my classroom library.
My Project
One of my goals this year is to make sure all my students are reflected somehow in my classroom library. My school is very diverse and I've realized my classroom library is not. This year that will change!
This project will help fill my bookshelves with stories full of characters from all walks of life, all colors, and many diverse backgrounds.
My hope is that when a student finds a book with characters similar to themselves, they will enjoy reading more and become lifelong readers. Lifelong readers make lifelong learners. Students will be able to check books out of my library to read for pleasure. My hope is that students will find this diverse collection of books appealing and want to finish a book from cover to cover. I hope to show them that there are books out there that reflect their life experiences.
