I am a sixth grade teacher who teaches Reading, Math, and Social Studies at Claremont Academy. Claremont is a predominately new school built in an low economic community. Many of the students in my sixth grade classroom view reading as their least favorite subject. I think a lot of it has to do with not having books at their reading or interest level. I believe my students would learn essential reading strategies if they had books that they can relate to. Reading will have so much more of an impact on them if they can access their prior knowledge of the subject and engage in meaningful discussions and activities, such as debates, character interviews, and reader's theater, where students are acting out a scene from a book. For my kids to be exposed to a reading curriculum that is relevant to their lives, I would like a classroom set of 35 of the books: "The Watson's go to Birmingham-1963" and "Bud not Buddy", both books by Christopher Paul Curtis. Both are fictional stories that portray kids experiencing life in monumental moments in history. These book provide an excellent opportunity to integrate Social Studies and reading into powerful activities. I believe having these wonderful books in my library will help my students develop a greater interest in reading and learn some strategies that will improve their comprehension and fluency.
