Books in the Air

My Students

My second-grade scholars come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. They range between the ages of 7 and 8 years old and receive their education in an urban environment with a population of 43.4% Black, Non-Hispanic, 26.5% Hispanic, 24.4% White, Non-Hispanic, and 4.6% Multiracial. My school participates in the Federal Free School Lunch program where 100% of our scholars receive a nutritional meal every day. They come to school despite what they are going through and work hard to accomplish a set goal.

We are also one of few STEM schools in the school district that provides all of our scholars with an equal opportunity for innovation, engineering and design principles, and stewardship within the context of cross-curricular, authentic problem-based learning units.

My Project

(Read to the tune of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme song) Now this is a plead about why I need books, so my students don't sit with disgusted looks and I'd like to take a minute to just sit and share and tell you why we need this project called "Books in the air."

In Mrs. W's class where we love to read well, each and every child according to his or her speed.

Chilling out, maxing, sometime before noon while checking out the resources located in the room. When a couple of books didn't look very good, I thought it might start messing with my "teacherhood". I got annoyed with the fact that nobody really care and said " I'm putting up a project called Books in the Air!"

I called another teacher and when they came near, the face that they'd shown was elated with fear. If anything I can say that the class ain't bare, but I thought nah, forget it, other Books in the Air.

I pulled out some of the books, about seven or eight and I told the whole class, "there has got to be greater!" Books for read alouds because it's just not fair, no diversity shown with all these Books in the Air!
