This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school is in a culturally-diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch as well as breakfast.

Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.

We are working to ensure that the Media Center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their goals.

My Project

Our school has one of the highest Spanish-speaking populations of any school in our district, yet our library's collection of books in Spanish is painfully small. When our English Language Learners visit the library, they have a very hard time finding a book they can read and enjoy doing so.

Help me put books in the hands of some of our most vulnerable readers.

At this time, we have an average of 1.7 books in Spanish for each ELL student. That number makes it really difficult for those students to find a book they actually want to read, much less more than one. We really need to provide these students with the resources to practice and enjoy reading. Reading develops literacy skills that turn our students into lifelong learners. Without access to books that they will genuinely want to read, students run the risk of falling behind their English-fluent peers who have a greater opportunity to develop a love of reading.

I am asking for new copies of about 40 titles written or translated into Spanish. These books will go a long way towards bolstering our "Libros en Espanol" section. I've chosen a wide variety of genres, topics, reading levels, and formats to ensure that every student can find a book that speaks to them. Thank you for supporting our students' literacy!
