This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A classroom library is where I first discovered my love of books. I need a place to put high-interest independent reading books for my students to borrow.
I require my students to read one independent reading book per quarter.
My students are awesome but they don't read much outside of class.
I often hear from them that "reading is boring." In the six years I've been teaching, I've taken many of those reluctant readers, gotten to know them, and paired them with a book that changes their mind about reading.
Many of our students can't afford books on their own and may not have a safe way to get to the nearest public library.
Our high school is seeing great gains in the number of students applying to four year universities. I want to keep that momentum going - and inspirational books are the engine that will keep it going.
My Project
Independent reading is one of the most important ways a student can begin to build literacy skills and imagination. My students don't read at grade level and don't engage well with text - because no book has inspired them - yet.
I just moved up to teaching high school after six years as a middle school teacher. I brought a lot of books with me and brought some in from my own home library; however, my new classroom has no bookcases except for the one filled with dictionaries.
My students are required to read one independent reading book per quarter and turn in a simple assignment to prove they've read. With the books in such disarray, it's hard for the students to believe in their value. I want a classroom with a rich, current, modern and broad library, where any student with any interest can find that special "it" book that can spark their interest in reading. I want a classroom library that lends itself (pun intended) to students wanting to read more than one book per quarter.
I am requesting 2 bookcases for my classroom to hold our textbooks as well as independent reading books.
A love of reading can change a student's life - and help them in every class.
It can open doors they did not even know existed. A teacher's library is where I first found a book I could not put down. I think it's critical to have a teacher armed with a powerful library to combat illiteracy.
Right now, my growing class library is on the floor, shoved in crates, and pushed up alongside the dictionaries. I want to provide a proper home for the books that I'm trying to convince my students are so vital.
