Books in Common

Help me give my students access to diverse independent reading books that they can take home and keep this summer due to library closures.

This project is fully funded

My Students

We live in a small rural town, and our community libraries are currently closed, similar to libraries across the country. A select few could read e-books or audiobooks, but most of our middle school students are in need of physical copies to sustain independent reading over the summer. Our students should be able to read without having to jump over hurdles to get there, like logging in on a device.

Middle schoolers need continued access to texts over the summer in order to remain positively engaged with independent reading; and students in our community do not necessarily have a library of materials at home to choose from.

Many of our students do not have access to texts without visiting Walmart or the library, and our families cannot be expected prioritize purchasing literature given the current state of things during the COVID-19 crisis.

My Project

The COVID-19 crisis has effectively shut down our school library, as well as the town public library, denying students access to books over the summer. It is essential to continue our middle schoolers' independent reading journeys in the wake of this crisis. Middle schoolers will have the opportunity to access current, high-interest, and diverse books recommended by the American Library Association.

Students grades 6-8 will have consistent opportunities to visit our local town common and take one to two books home.

Mobile arrangements will be made for students who are unable to visit our town common due to transportation limitations, and volunteers from our school community will assist in the distribution of the books.

Books provided by Books in Common will not be returned, and students will own the books they choose. Book displays will be set up outdoors in the town gazebo to allow small groups of students to browse reading materials without the risk of direct physical contact.
