My Students

My school has been serving K-6 students, both military dependents and local residents, since 1956 as part of the Hawaii State Department of Education. My classroom integrates a remarkably diverse population that includes Filipinos, Caucasians, African-Americans, Samoans, and Asian-Americans.

I am an elementary school special education teacher, teaching students where small groups, close proximity, and acceptance is very important.

My students range in abilities and grade-levels, which makes my classroom a fun and unique environment to be a part of.

My Project

The materials I have individually selected will make a difference in my students' learning by increasing their intrinsic motivation to read books.

Because my students struggle with reading, it is really important that I not only have a large supply of books, but books at their instructional reading levels and interest levels!

These books will ultimately improve their lives at school because we use the Accelerated Reader (AR) program that inspires them to read and earn points for reading. These goals are set by the librarian based on individual need; in my classroom, they are met every quarter. Then, because they pass their goals, they get to invite their parents at the end of the quarter Awards Assembly.

I am proud to say that, this school year, my classroom won the highest percent (100%) of goals met at 3 out of the 4 assemblies!

I am so proud of them and am looking forward to the opportunity to have books at their level that they are interested in!
