Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school services an inner city and the students come from the immediate area. It is a large school of many languages and hundreds of sixth to eighth graders. The school is a wonderful example of America's diversity and inclusion.
My students need reading material that honors African American History in the United States.
My students are eager to come to the media center during lunch and homeroom. The students in our school love to read and explore new subjects, so our media center is a busy place. For many of our students, the school media center is the only place available to them to explore their interests with independent reading materials. Bringing research sources and engaging books that encourages reading and project-based activities, that interest the students, will support their educational endeavors and independent reading enjoyment.
My Project
African American struggles and contributions to American war efforts, culture, and society are often overlooked. I envision these books as a way for the students of our multi-cultural school to recognize African American success stories, and sacrifices they made for the country.
The selected books will coordinate with the students' year-end project-based learning Social Studies project, by injecting American American contributions to the formation and defense of the United States of America.
Having research material that specifies African American history, in general, and on specific topics, in collaboration with the social studies department will enhance the learning experience for students of all races and nationalities within our school, by emphasizing the importance of African American contributions.
