Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our grade 1 and 2 students are special because they are beginner ESL students who are learning both the language and the content. They are energetic, enthusiastic and love to learn, especially about science and social studies!
This project would provide our ENL students with their own copy of interesting science and social studies readers written just at their level.
We will practice reading each day and follow up by using their journal to write and draw about all they have learned.
Having high interest nonfiction readers will help develop our students' knowledge and confidence so they learn to read while also learning important information and skills. Being able to draw and write about what they have read in their journals will reinforce the learning and allow our students to express themselves in English with pictures and words.
Every day, our beginner ESL students receive one period of instruction in their classroom with a co-teaching model and also one period of targeted instruction with the ESL teacher in a separate ESL classroom. These beautiful, colorful and high interest nonfiction books with rebus support will foster independence, grow vocabulary and reinforce important reading and writing skills each and every day while learning about fascinating and kid-friendly science, math and social studies topics.
