My students come from country homes, life in the big city, migrant families, and Spanish-speaking households. They range in their acquisition of the English language, and they have a variety of extracurricular interests from soccer and football, to student council and scouting. They love to write scary stories, learn about dinosaurs, and discuss scientific issues.
My students have unmatched school spirit, thirst for knowledge, and passion for helping others and the planet.
With many of their families speaking languages other than English at home, they are forced to be independent with their learning. Third grade is a year of excitement and change, and I sincerely hope that you will choose to be a part of it!
My Project
In third grade, many kids begin reading chapter books for the first time. Picking up long books can be intimidating, especially because they have smaller font sizes than most picture books. Graphic novels help kids make this transition by offering pictures that further the story along with the chapters like comic books. They have wit, humor, and they tackle big issues.
These graphic novels will hook my students on reading with their funny plot lines and easy-to-read formats.
They will also allow my students to express their artistic sides by teaching them how to draw different characters, like Jennifer and Matt Holm do in the Squish series. By donating these books to our classroom, you will help my students, especially those nervous about transitioning to bigger books, feel comfortable and excited about reading.
