The children in my classroom are 4 years old and for many, this is their first experience in school. Seeing the excitement on their faces as they participate in the classroom for the first time is priceless! Our school is a Great Start Readiness Program which is a state funded program for children who are at risk. Our goal is to provide children with a strong foundation in academics and social skills to be successful inside and outside of school.
My preschool class is comprised of 16 amazing students, all of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Providing my students with opportunities and experiences they may not be able to participate in at home is essential to prepare them for later school experiences.
My Project
My students come from multicultural backgrounds and do not always have access to picture books representing their home cultures outside of school. Many come from one car families so traveling to the library is not always an option, and due to financial restrictions are not able to purchase books of their own.
Providing copies of high quality children's books in my classroom highlighting multicultural characters and STEAM topics will strengthen classroom community, reading skills, and encourages a love of school.
Building a strong foundation for reading in the preschool years is integral to student success in the future. Connecting with literary characters that look and act like them helps children to relate to the content; as well as assimilate information faster and easier.
