My Students

I teach 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Special Education to an amazing group of learning abled students. I share an average of 25-30 students with my 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade general education colleagues. My goal is to provide differentiated instruction at each student's learning level. The ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between the level an individual child is currently learning at to that of their respective grade level.

The students in my classroom not only possess average to above-average intelligence but also the determination to push past the learning obstacles that challenge them daily.

My students benefit from a learning environment that provides one on one or small group instruction that focuses on their individual needs. Providing an atmosphere with reduced noise and distractions decreases my students stress allowing them to focus on the learning tasks at hand.

Our school is located in the middle of the largest city in Montana. It is a Title I school that provides additional services to our families that often struggle to find employment and opportunity. In addition to struggling with learning objectives, our students face challenges in their daily lives that no child should ever have to think about.

My Project

The books I have selected pair with writing activities that demonstrate well-written sentences. Each book highlights an author's craft. The books were chosen based on style, language, organization, and conventions.

Our goal is to expose our special education students to a wide variety of print-rich materials.

The books selected are read aloud to my students and incorporated into a writing program called "Mentor Sentences" by Jivey. After listening to the picture book, students have a daily writing activity to complete based on the story they listened to. Each activity focuses on the book and specific sentence structures that demonstrate what good sentences looks like.

These books are high-interest books the students are excited about. Once we complete the weekly writing lessons, the book is placed in our classroom library so my students can enjoy them during free time. Seeing my students, who struggle with reading and writing, get excited about both subjects is my main goal every year. Gaining a love of reading and writing will help them be successful as they continue to master concepts.

Exposing my students to a wide variety of well written print, provides them with opportunities to see the purpose of developing their reading and writing skills. When learning is difficult, it is important for the students to be exposed to high interest activities.
