I am a first-grade teacher in Staten Island, New York. My students live in a low socio-economic area. Many of my children come from homes where the parent receives social services, and some families live in shelters.
Every night I assign reading homework. Children are to read books each night and record what they have read. Well, we've gotten to the point where all my take-home library books have been read and reread. I recently told a child who has read over forty books this year to read a book he had at home. He replied that "I don't really have any books at home." I was so surprised; sometimes we take for granted what we have. I could not imagine a child growing up without books at home to look at and read on rainy days.
I would love to give the children at least two books to keep at home at the end of the school year. Unfortunately, that would mean at least forty-eight books, and I could not afford to purchase that many books. My wish would be to have the children choose two books they have come to love from our classroom library at the end of the school year to keep and cherish.
Please help the love of reading grow in these children. I have sparked the flame in them, it just needs to be kindled.
