Books for What Ails You: Teaching Social-Emotional Skills and Inclusiveness

Help me give my students books that help them to understand and process anxiety and stress, model healthy social-emotional learning and resilience, and feature a diversity of perspectives to further teach them inclusiveness and anti-racism.

My Students

My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.

Between the pandemic, societal unrest, and recent challenges we have faced as a school community, this has been an incredibly difficult school year for many of my students.

I don't know if I would have been able to handle, at their age, what my students have been facing every day. I want to provide them with books that can be a welcome retreat from the stressors of the day, but can also provide them with ways to process and work through the difficulties they're experiencing. I want students to more clearly envision the great things yet awaiting in their futures. I also want them to more clearly understand and empathize with those who seem different from them, so that they are more prepared to work as productive and compassionate citizens in a just, equitable society.

My Project

Reading allows you to walk a mile in someone else's shoes without ever having to leave your seat. As my students read these novels featuring diverse protagonists, including Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and African-Americans, they will grow in empathy for those who at first glance appear different from themselves.

In fact, through these books, my students will understand both themselves AND others better.

Many of my students need to process through stress or even trauma, like the characters in these novels. As the students read about models of healthy and non-healthy relationships and responses to stressors, they will grow in their own social-emotional learning (SEL) skills. Many books (like Alfonso Jones) discuss both tolerance and responding to trauma/SEL simultaneously. The nonfiction texts provide specific and pointed how-to tips for mindfully responding to stress and anxiety.

These are hard times, to be sure. But in reading these books, my students will become more mindful of others, and mindful of their own well being.
