Books for Virtual and Hybrid Learning to Increase Literacy
Help me give my students books that will address the SEL portion of education, and help them grapple with complex emotions, while improving their literacy levels.

My Students
I am the school librarian at a school in the Brandywine School District that is Title I. Our students are inner-city youth and adolescent readers, many of which struggle to find interest in reading. Many wish they could read better, but have a difficult time reading. They have struggled with the COVID crisis, both emotionally, and with finding inspiration to read, and many have asked me if I would purchase more graphic novels. For struggling readers, graphic novels offer the perfect entrance into the world of literacy. These are students who need to see other adolescents like them in the pages of a book, one that will spark their interest, and also validate their emotional journey.
My Project
I would like to use the $1,000 offered to qualifying recipients to purchase graphic novels that will capture their interest at any reading level. We will soon return and be hybrid. We will have to split our lunch students up, and have many of them waiting in the auditorium during lunch, so physical books such as graphic novels could go a long way in improving literacy and behavior during this time. Even if the COVID crisis worsens, and we return to virtual later in the year, I would like to offer a drive-up check out service. These graphic novels would be one of the only things students would make a trip to the school to pick up and read; my circulation statistics tell me that.
Students will be able to access virtual books online while at home, and once we return to hybrid, they will have a large selection while they are separated during lunch block and in the auditorium, waiting.
I will also bring the physical books on book carts to classrooms to check out, to continue to keep books in the hands of students. Students need books that address the SEL portion of their experience, and that is what I will strive to do in my selection of books. I will try to find books that help students grapple with complex emotions, while improving their literacy.
