This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school where most students come from low-income households. They come from a community plagued by discriminatory policies, poverty, and violence and attend schools that suffer the unfortunate consequences of systemic oppression: low funding, under-resourcing, etc. My students constantly battle against circumstances that all too often lead to frustration, fear, and failure.

My students are bright, energetic, and full of potential, and we must not let circumstances beyond our control hinder their growth as learners.

They want to be successful. They want to positively impact their futures. They want to learn. And I want to provide them with every opportunity to be the students I know they can be.

My Project

I teach English and ELD (English Language Development) at a Title I school in Richmond, California. Nearly all of my students are low-income.

According to a report from The Urban Child Institute: “Researchers have found that while there are more than a dozen books per child in middle-income neighborhoods, in low-income neighborhoods the ratio is closer to one book for every three hundred children.”

My students lack the resources that are readily available to their peers in wealthier districts. My students deserve access to high-quality books, and currently, our school is lacking in books that are both culturally relevant and linguistically- and age-appropriate. I want to foster a love for reading in my students. Please help me provide them with books that will lead them to love reading!
