My Project

Every year our school participates in a school-wide reading program. Everyone who is part of our school community participates, from students to janitors, from counselors to families! Each year we choose a chapter book that is part of a series. I have found that students love to read the next book in the series once we finish our school-wide reading of the first book.

My goal is to keep the reading momentum and love of stories continue for the students!

This project has two parts. The first part is to allow students to have the experience to check-out a "Character-Journal bag" out from the library. These bags will include a stuffed animal related to the story, in this case a hamster, and a composition journal. Students will be able to check out these bags to write about the many adventures the hamster goes on while "living" with the student for the next few days. As more students check the bags out, more adventures will be written, and pictures will be added to the journals. The journals will be on display for the students to ready all about the school-wide adventures that happen with the book character!

The second part of this project is to give students the opportunity to receive a free copy of the second book in the series. These book copies will be placed in our book vending machine at school so that we can send interested and trivia-winning students to the vending machine to get their own copy of the next book.

I love seeing our students get excited about learning and finding a book they enjoy reading!
