This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The book club consists of students of all grade levels who are interested in sharing their love of reading with other students. These students include a diverse group of highly-motivated readers. They meet weekly to plan what books they will read, organize fundraisers and literacy event, and to talk about books! Our school is a Title 1 school with the majority of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While they love books and libraries, buying 10 books a year for book club is not possible for all members.

In creating this campaign, the students in book club have learned leadership and communication skills. They had to work together to articulate why this project is needed and important. Also, in determining which books to request, the students met and discussed the needs of the group, developing excellent collaboration and planning skills.

Moreover, there is just the general benefit of reading independently. Studies show that students who read more on their own are more successful in all subjects. Finally, reading fiction creates empathy and develops critical thinking in readers. Thus, but providing a shared text, book club and this project encourage independent reading and thinking.

In Their Own Words

As the school year began, Book Club has seen a huge increase in members. So much so that we didn't have enough copies to distribute to each member. Because of this I am asking a donor to donate five copies each of Cinder by Marissa Meyer and Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard for each of the new club members. These books were extremely successful in attracting the clubs next generation. The members were very interested and enthusiastic in contributing their input and constructive criticism to both novels.

As the new Book Club President, I was determined to draw in the next generation of readers with these intriguing novels by renovating the club. The plan was overwhelmingly successful, with 19 new club members signing up! Our discussions have are an interactive and exciting experience. We create a calm environment that brings out each member's creative opinions and thought process. Such activity would include debates of plot and character development and brainstorming alternate scenes.

As the year progresses we look forward to introducing the new members to even more wonderful experiences. I want to make sure that the club and what it stands for thrives in our school. I want to make sure that this year's book club provides the same opportunities that this club has given to me and the environment to express our love of books openly.
