Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dreams, books, are each a world; and books, we know, Are a substantial world, both pure and good. Round these, with tendrils strong as flesh and blood, Our pastime and our happiness will grow. --William Wordsworth What more wonderful gift to a teen than a book of her/his own and friends to share?

Our school is a comprehensive high school serving the working class community in a geographically isolated region in northeastern Los Angeles.

Our students are not only ethnically diverse with no one group holding a majority, but have diverse interests from calculus to movies to Japanese to vampires. A book club filled with curious, avid readers who love the smell of real paper books! However, with 73% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged, many cannot afford the luxury of books for themselves, nevermind a book every few weeks for book club. Moreover, there are no book stores nearby and most students do not have access to credit cards to buy books online! Our students deserve to dwell in the world of books and share what they learn there about wonder and life with others. I would love to buy these books for our young scholars, but with absence of library funds, I cannot without your help!

My Project

The books bought with your donations will be available for any student who wants to participate in book club. I will give students the book to read for the designated meeting and to add to her/his personal library! The book club is completely student run -- they choose the books, set the dates, and lead the discussions. Currently, the book club meets every two weeks in the library during lunch. There are a mix of students from all grade levels and this year we are excited to have some freshman who are eager to help the club grow the next few years!

For many of these students, being able to share reading with others is a rare experience.

In addition to the literacy benefits, having one’s passion acknowledged and shared fosters confidence and creates community. It is inspiring to see young people blossom and grow in a community of readers. Please help support our young literary lights.
