My Students

I teach middle school students (sixth through eighth-graders) who qualify for special education in an inner-city, charter school in Youngstown, Ohio. This area is high poverty and most, if not all of the students, fall far below the poverty line. My school is a Title I funded school where all of the children receive free breakfast and lunch. They work so hard and have persevered through a difficult year of distance learning. They are now back in the building and everyone is so excited!

The students I work with love to learn and see themselves making progress!

My Project

It's important to make sure that my students will continue to have access to interesting novels that they want to read. Creating a comfortable learning environment, providing a safe space, and motivating students towards their goals are assisted through a literacy-rich environment. Additionally, as we work to increase their reading levels, we have found that it can be difficult to access a wide range of leveled novels that are appropriate for their age. I would like to increase student exposure to diverse children's books that have characters that represent our unique student population.

Students who aren't ever given a new book due to financial constraints, will have the chance to select from our class library and even keep resources to use at home.

By adding more books of this kind, I know that my students will keep reading all year long. The students I work with love to read when they can connect with the text. The more books students have in their hands that have diverse characters, the more culturally diverse and culturally educated our students will become.
