This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning the kids burst in as soon as the clock strikes 8:10. The room comes alive with cries of "Good morning, Ms. J!" or "Buenos dias, Ms. J!" They come in cradling the books they were reading the night before, and looking forward to the minute they will open them again.

My 5th grade students are bilingual in Spanish and English.

Many were born and raised in our immigrant enclave, and some are first-generation Brooklynites. As they select and enjoy books that appeal to them, my students are making decisions about the kinds of people they will become. They are already bilingual, and they become more biliterate every day.

My Project

Imagine forty-five minutes each school-day to read whatever your heart desires. This is the magic of reader's workshop. It is one child flipping pages of a gorgeous DK Encyclopedia while her table-mate is engrossed in a graphic novel about Drama Club. It is the intimacy of reading the same series as a BFF as well as the fun of hunting for new facts to impress an older brother. On Spanish days, it is the thrills of Goosebumps available in your native language, and of book conversations you can continue with your parents at home. It is the spontaneous book-recommending and book-swapping that turn our classroom into a generous and hopeful place. It is what happens when the right books are on the shelves.

In two months, my students will be middle schoolers.

Over the year I have watched them change and grow up. The topics and texts that captured their interest in September have had their moment and been replaced with new interests: crushes and popularity, of course, but also issues of social justice and a fascination with adventure, survival, and the world outside our city. They are looking outward even as they become more introspective, and I want our classroom library to evolve alongside them.
