Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." Maya Angelou My students need a bookshelf full of highly engaging books that will captivate their interest in reading.

My 8th graders are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.

Our urban middle school (7th and 8th grade) is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Northern California. About 70% of our 640 students qualify for a free or reduced price lunch. So-called minorities (Latino, Asian, African-Americans, and Pacific Islanders) make up more than 90% of our student population. Although these teens possess many amazing gifts, only a small percentage of them read for pleasure.

My Project

By adding 10 minutes per day of Sustained Silent Reading in my classroom, I hope to increase students' enjoyment of reading. Studies show that students who choose their own books and read voluntarily at least 10 minutes per day have better work habits, social and emotional development, language development, and overall school performance (Arthur, 1995). By making reading a routine in my classroom and having a variety of engaging books to choose from, students may reap rewards that will last them a lifetime.

Your donations to this project will make my classroom a better place for readers.

Having multiple copies of engaging books geared to teens and adding 10 minutes of SSR on a daily basis can help create a love for reading that will last a lifetime.
