My students need books with tactile/sensory components or books with high contrast illustrations in order to be able to understand and explore concepts being read to them.
I work with some of the most amazing children who have multiple severe physical and mental disabilities. The majority of my class is blind and I have a few students who are both deaf and blind. We utilize a curriculum called M.O.V.E. to work on mobility and communication skills throughout the entire school day to help students become more independent. Due to my students visual impairments we utilize a lot of tactile objects to help them explore their environment and understand concepts presented.
My Project
My classroom library is currently fairly small because it is very difficult to find books that students with low vision or blindness are able to fully experience. These students typically require books with tactile components, sensory components or high contrast colors to understand what’s being read to them. With this project, my students will be able to more easily understand the concepts being read to them and will fully benefit from and be more motivated and interested in reading time. By gaining an understanding of concepts read in books, it will also help them gain an understanding about concepts they encounter in the classroom and in life as well.
