My Students

My students are highly motivated youth living in the Alaskan Bush. We live in a remote community of about 300 people that is an hour flight from the nearest city (and away from any roads). My students have been profoundly impacted from the COVID pandemic in terms of their schooling, and it is incredibly challenging to get resources out here.

When I arrived here in August, none of my students were reading on grade level due to the school closures.

They are, however, very motivated and are catching up and reading through the books faster than I can get them. They also LOVE reading and ask every adult that enters our room to read to them or listen to them read.

My Project

Three weeks ago, we went to remote learning due to the increasing number of COVID cases in our region. Most of our students don't have internet and have therefore been unable to complete much work outside of paper packets. I am working to get them access to more books so they are able to continue reading and stay engaged while at home. At the moment, our school lacks books for students of younger ages, and my students have already read through most of the collection. I would like to get more books to help motivate them to love reading!
