Books for Students: A More Realistic View of Their Struggles

Help me give my students the tools necessary to understand the world around them and all the people in it. Your donations will give my students books with heroes that look like them, that face the same struggles.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I hear and I forget. I see and I believe. I do and I understand." Confucius's statement is one I live by in my teaching philosophy. I encourage my students to be active in their learning and experiences. Hands-on science is crucial!

My students are the shining stars of their families and communities, deserving every opportunity possible.

They come mostly from a poverty-stricken neighborhood.

While they have a sense of community within their neighborhood, they come to me lacking the knowledge and experiences most children have. I help my students through local funds, grants, and fundraising to participate in many scientific activities.

Several of the students took their love of science and participated in the science fair, three kids represented our school at the regionals, with one of them advancing to state and Broadcom Masters.

As always we display our science achievements at community events where the students present their topics. These kids do not let their economic levels affect the positive impact they will make on our scientific communities.

My Project

Living in South Texas, I often find myself finding books based on our Hispanic cultures. I purchase them everywhere I can find them. My students love seeing characters they can relate to, but I am not able to find books about all cultures and races represented at our campus. In addition, I don't often find books that discuss the struggles and injustices people of color often have to face.

My students need books that emphasize the struggles and injustices that Americans have had to face because of their skin color.

Happy stories are great, but we need real stories of the diversity faced by people of color in America. For some of my students, they will find characters they can relate to, for others, they will learn that many races have to fight inequalities. This will help to create a generation of humans who care about others. People who embrace our unique cultures and difference, yet treat everyone equally with respect and understanding.
