I teach middle and high school students with special needs on the South Side of Chicago. Almost all of my students have difficulties with reading. While the school has scheduled independent reading time, there are very few books in the school that are accessible to my students. I need to build my classroom library as fast as possible.
I have requested a mix of fiction and non-fiction books that are lower level, high interest books – books intended for older students who are still struggling with reading. These books will be accessible to my students without being childish. In order for my students to learn to read, they need books that are engaging and on their level. With the right books, amazing things can happen. One of my students danced when he finished reading his first chapter book. Now I need a second chapter book for him to read.
All of my students will benefit from these books. Please give this opportunity to enjoy reading to the students who need it the most.
