My Students

Speech & Debate Class is an elective course taken by members of our award-winning Speech & Debate Team. Juniors and seniors run this class by training the novices on the team. Kids use what they learn in class when they compete at tournaments nearly every weekend.

Our school is a public charter school that serves 400 students, 100% of whom are Black and/or Latino, 75% of whom qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch.

Our Speech & Debate Team provides students who are historically underrepresented in Speech & Debate with the opportunities to compete both locally and nationally nearly every weekend from October through May in public speaking and debating. Over 25 active members were successful at local, regional and national competitions last year in Original Oratory, Extemporaneous Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Declamation, Student Congress and Public Forum Debate. Students advanced to elimination rounds at several national tournaments, including Villiger at St. Joseph's University, the Princeton Classic, and the Liberty Bell Classic. Two students earned spots to the NCFL National Championship in Sacramento over Memorial Day Weekend. Over the course of our season, nine students qualified for the State Championship, where four were quarter-finalists.

My Project

These books will be used specifically by the students on the team who focus primarily on current events, our Extempers and Student Congress representatives. These students will use these books to deepen their foundation in foreign policy and international relations. We will work unit by unit through the various regions of the world and make connections to current events in politics and international affairs.

In the Extemp Prep Room at the State Championship this year, I counted three kids who were Black or Hispanic, and two of them were from my team.

Our school can't afford to send our kids to the fancy Speech & Debate summer camps that other kids go to, but having copies of this book will give our kids a tremendous edge at tournaments. We're trying to change the face of competitive Speech & Debate, one student at a time, and your support will help us do just that.
